A voice of Ukraine to the West
90% of cruise missiles where downed in the overnight missile attack, but 12 power facilities were hit
Russia conducted a large-scale overnight attack on November 27-28, targeting Ukraine's critical infrastructure, particularly in the fuel and energy sectors, resulting in 12 confirmed strikes, Ukraine's Air Force reported. Despite significant challenges, Ukraine's air defense successfully intercepted approximately 90% of the Kalibr and Kh-101 cruise missiles, along with three guided aircraft missiles and 35 drones. Over 60 other enemy aerial targets reportedly disappeared from radar during the assault.
Ukraine's Air Force highlighted Russia's evolving tactics, including the extensive use of missiles and drones to overwhelm defenses in specific areas. Russian forces have adopted advanced measures such as deploying thermal and radar traps and integrating electronic warfare equipment directly onto missiles, complicating interception by Ukraine's primarily Soviet-era air defense systems. While Western air defense systems have proven more effective, their numbers remain insufficient to adequately protect Ukraine's vast infrastructure. Additionally, severe weather conditions, including fog and cloud cover, hindered the operations of Ukrainian fighter aircraft and mobile fire units during the attack.
The Air Force emphasized the critical need for continued international support to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and urged citizens to adhere to safety recommendations during attacks.
