On April 16, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone attack on Dnipro. Two adults and a 17-year-old girl were killed. 30 people were injured.

Among the victims was a young girl, and an elderly woman also lost her life. Five children were injured in the attack, including a nine-month-old infant, a six-year-old, and an 11-year-old. One of the children died as a result of the injuries. Sixteen patients remain under hospital supervision, with one reported to be in serious condition.

The attack caused several fires throughout the city. Damage was reported to residential buildings, educational and cultural institutions, and vehicles. Civilian infrastructure was also affected. One of the Shahed drones nearly struck the city hall.

The incident comes as the United States continues to lead ceasefire negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Saudi Arabia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on April 6 that Russia had rejected an unconditional ceasefire, choosing instead to continue missile strikes from the Black Sea.

Despite Ukraine agreeing on March 11 to a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire, contingent on Russian participation, Moscow has so far refused. Russian officials have put forward extensive demands, signaling an unwillingness to move forward with a peace agreement.

Russia reportedly is planning to use a seized US food company to supply its military

Russia is reportedly planning to use the American-owned food company Glavproduct, which it seized in October 2024, to supply canned goods to its military, Reuters reported on April 17, citing internal documents.

Glavproduct, a canned food producer originally established by Los Angeles-based businessman Leonid Smirnov, is the only U.S.-owned company to have been taken under Russian state control since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

According to a letter from the company’s new management to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, the seizure was justified as a necessary measure to ensure stable production and future supplies for Russia’s Defense Ministry and the National Guard.

The letter, reviewed by Reuters, also revealed that Rosimushchestvo, Russia’s federal property management agency, appointed a new CEO at the request of Druzhba Narodov, a food supplier with longstanding connections to Kremlin-affiliated security forces.

Druzhba Narodov previously held a contract as the sole supplier to the Russian National Guard between 2019 and 2020, based on investigations by the Anti-Corruption Foundation founded by the late Alexei Navalny.

The company is also linked to Alexander Tkachov, former Russian Agriculture Minister, who was sanctioned by the European Union in 2014 for supporting the annexation of Crimea.
