Ukraine's Air Force says US has joined investigation into deadly F-16 crash

The U.S. has joined the investigation into the recent crash of an F-16 fighter jet in Ukraine, as confirmed by Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk on August 30. The incident occurred on August 26, when the F-16, piloted by Oleksii Mes, was involved in defending Ukraine against a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack. Tragically, the pilot was killed when the aircraft went down.

Oleshchuk mentioned that Ukraine had received a preliminary report from the U.S., which is actively participating in the investigation to determine the cause of the crash. This comes after Ukraine's Defense Ministry established a special commission to look into the incident.

However, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh stated that she was unaware of any official request from Ukraine for U.S. assistance in investigating the crash, suggesting that specific inquiries should be directed to Ukrainian officials. An unnamed U.S. defense official told Reuters that the crash did not seem to be caused by Russian fire, and other potential causes, such as pilot error or mechanical failure, are under investigation.

According to Ukraine's General Staff, the F-16 had successfully shot down four missiles during the attack, showcasing its effectiveness. However, communication with the jet was lost during its approach to another target, leading to the crash.

Oleshchuk emphasized that the investigation will be thorough, and no details are being concealed. He also noted that specific information about the incident cannot be disclosed immediately due to security concerns.

This F-16 crash occurred shortly after Ukraine received its first batch of these jets, with only 10 delivered so far. Ukraine is expected to receive a total of 79 F-16s from the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Belgium as part of ongoing international support.

Due to the increasing danger, Ukrainian authorities have initiated the evacuation of residents from the region.
