Russian troops reportedly killed 3 Ukrainian POWs in Donetsk Oblast

Russian forces have reportedly executed three Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) in the southwest of Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine’s Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets announced on Jan. 6. According to reports from DeepState, the POWs had their hands tied and were shot in the back of the head, a method consistent with previous atrocities.

"This is another stark example of Russia's inhumanity," Lubinets said, highlighting the continued reports of abuse, torture, and executions of Ukrainian POWs, which have surged in recent months. Most of these violations have been documented in the embattled Donetsk Oblast.

The alleged incident occurred on Jan. 3 near the village of Neskuchne in the Volnovakha district. In response, Lubinets pledged to urgently inform the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations, calling for action to address these atrocities.

In December 2024, Lubinets reported that Russian forces executed at least 109 Ukrainian POWs during the year. Such acts are blatant violations of the Geneva Conventions, which strictly prohibit the execution of prisoners of war.

Macron expressed some pressure on Ukraine regarding the discussions on territorial issues

French President Emmanuel Macron called on Ukraine to engage in "realistic discussions on territorial issues" as part of efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia. Speaking at the annual meeting of French ambassadors, Macron said only Ukrainians could make such decisions.

He emphasized that the United States must help bring Russia to the negotiating table, while Europe should take responsibility for building security guarantees for Ukraine. Macron warned that there would be no quick solution to the war and criticized promises, such as those from Donald Trump, to end the conflict within 24 hours.

Macron also cautioned against compromising with Russia out of "war fatigue," arguing that Ukraine's defeat would undermine trust in the West and harm both European and American interests.

Russians resume offensive operations east of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast

Russian forces have intensified their offensive operations east of Pokrovsk, according to recent reports. Geolocated footage from January 1 indicates that Russian troops have captured Vozdvyzhenka, situated east of the city.

Further geolocated footage, published on January 5, suggests that Russian forces have also taken control of Svyrydonivka and Tymofiivka in recent days. Additionally, they advanced into southeastern Yelyzavetivka, located south of Pokrovsk, during a platoon-sized mechanized assault. These developments underscore the ongoing pressure in the region as Russian troops push further into Ukrainian territory.
